Do you prefer the simple lines and clean design of modern architecture over arts and crafts? Mid-century modern your thing? Seattle is experiencing the beginning of a trend toward modern. Referred to as very “Dwell” Magazine, these new construction homes and townhouses are designed with soothing aesthetics, lots of natural materials including stone, concrete and metal and have an abundance of natural light.

As with most cities, Seattle’s available building lots are scarce and few between in the metro area. Due to high demand and price, builders are looking to neighborhoods where they can afford to tear down an existing structure and build. Neighborhoods all over Seattle like Columbia City are seeing interesting and unique projects spring up. These new modern homes are juxtaposed against Seattle’s older homes that consist primarily of arts and crafts styles and homes built pre-1940. One of the benefits of the new modern design is the high ceilings and large windows that offer lots of natural light during Seattle’s darker days.

Mid-century modern design is also gaining popularity in Seattle where homes built in the 50’s are fairly plentiful. These homes exterior173wardstreet.jpgoffer great traditional floor-plans, solid construction and simple architectural lines with interesting details. The attraction for mid-century modern homes is fueled by the ability to remodel and restore these homes to the owners tastes and design aesthetics.
