The Carbon-Free Prosperity report said five types of green-power businesses are most likely to succeed in Oregon and Washington:

  • Manufacturing solar photovoltaics, which convert sunlight to energy.  A big plant in Moses Lake and eight other companies in the Northwest already are in this line of work.
  • Wind Power. Although manufacturing wind-power turbines is probably not in the cards, the Northwest’s intellectual climate and other attributes could make it a center for headquarters of wind firms.
  • Green development. Already Seattle is home to the largest number of architects accredited to design “green” buildings under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.
  • Sustainable bioenergy. Timber waste, in particular, shows promise for conversion to energy, but there are other possibilities, including farming wastes such as wheat straw and cow manure, and converting cities’ waste to power.
  • Smart grid technology.  This could include developing devices that tell when it’s most efficient to run the dishwasher or the dryer.
